The Slovene coast, beautiful itself, is also a perfect starting point for exploring the amazing interior of the country. Just moor your boat in one of the marinas located in Piran, Izola, Koper or Portoroz and start discovering the nearby Karst Region, which hides a real masterpieces of the Mother Nature – karst caves.
This picturesque phenomena can be found in half of the area of the country. However, its most remarkable examples are located in the Karst Region, such as the famous Skocjan Caves which is one of the largest known underground canyons in the world, included in the UNESCO’s list of natural and cultural world heritage sites.
In addition to the splendid Skocjan Caves, shaped by the Reka River, Slovenia is home to some other significant karst phenomena, such as the Postojna Cave, considered as the most visited cave in whole Europe. It’s a breathtaking 24 kilometers long system of tunnels, passages, galleries and halls, created by the Pivka River. There are many smaller caves connected with the Postojna Cave, just to mention the most significant ones: the Pivka Cave, the Crna Jama Cave, the Planinska Jama Cave, the Otoska Jama Cave and others. In addition to the magnificent caves, the Karst Region hides also some other unusual examples of karst phenomena.
One of them is the Cerknica Lake, the largest natural lake in Slovenia, which… disappears every autumn, when it’s drained into the reservoirs lying below its level. For the next few months the place is turned to a valley, covered with lush vegetation. Another fabulous example of the shaping power of karst rivers can be found in the Rakov Skocjan Regional Park.
With its natural stony bridges thrown high above the river, it’s a place that can’t be missed. Since bad weather days happen more often during the last weeks of the sailing season, a day out in the amazing underground kingdom of the Karst Region, just a stone’s throw from the Slovene coast, may be a good alternative to a walk through medieval towns or a sunbath on a sandy beach.
